The Unsinkable Mollie Witow

My Hero:

October 20th, 1920-June 8th, 2021

Infant Refugee from the Russian Civil War born in the Free City of Danzig after her parents took the last train out of the Soviet Union before the border closed for 70 years. One of the first Jewish woman students at Catholic University in Washington DC. German to English translator at Wright-Patterson airforce base for defected Nazi scientists, names classified but most likely including Werner von Braun. Investigated by the Pentagon during the McCarthy era. Librarian to H.L. Mencken. Friend of John Hope Franklin. Friend to and regular shopper in the record store of Benjamin Glass - father of Philip Glass. Traveller to at least 59 countries. Collector of autographs, books, travel souvenirs. Everyday fashion plate for weird clothes from her many travels which she spoke of like hunting trophies. Witness to the the near-entirety of the 20th century and one of the last living links with its beginning. Lifelong lover of classical music, astronomy, archeology, and art.
I will miss you every day of my life Bubbie. You were the inspiration for everything.
