Rosh Hashana falls on the 25th anniversary of 9/11. It is also the 41st anniversary of my grandfather's passing, who worked at the Pentagon, where, three weeks into college, I saw the smoke billow from the top floor of the dorm window.
This is a scary new year, the notions that held society up are creaking, young people are in despair and any safety net we have left is being gutted. The future looks bleak. What we have left is each other. Our communities still matter, the individuals in your life still matter, we can still believe in each other and assume the best of each other even as we sometimes get hurt. The world is worth it. Morale is worth it. Service is worth it. Responsibility is worth it. And so are rights, freedoms, dignities and pleasures.
A good and sweet new year to everyone. A year of blessings and without misfortune.
