I've talked about Markus Stenz before, my former 'hometown hero' who as Principal Guest Conductor in Baltimore made the orchestra sound the greatest it's ever been, greater even than David Zinman did. Here he is during the quarantined non-season, with a Kurt Masur beard, doing a chamber orchestra program with Florence's Orchestra della Toscana. The Hebrides Overture is clearly underrehearsed, but the quiet sections absolute magic. The bulk of the rehearsal time clearly went into Haydn's Surprise Symphony, which is as good as it gets - the equal of what Adam Fischer got in the same piece earlier in the pandemic; but like the Fischers, the level of detail Stenz continually manages to get from orchestras is a miracle only a master can elicit, with the spontaneity of folk music. It's not the only way to be a great conductor, but for fun, wit, and joy, nothing can compare.

Here he is in Seoul doing a Beethoven 5 electrically.
